Results of the 2011 Region 4 Hickory Golf Tournament

April 13, 2011

Texas gave all entrants to the Region IV Hickory Event a dose of typical Texas weather as the annual Swift Cup matches between Canada and the USA kicked off the event with the Canadian visitors claiming a huge victory over the USA team, 16-5. Of course, the Canadians brought their own weather with them this year and the matches were played in a cool, 58 degrees, with intermittent, misty rain throughout the day with the sun peaking out as the matches ended.

The first round started off with chilly, 50 degree weather, but warmed to a nice 63 degree afternoon.
The second round introduced why most of us live in Texas, as we played in a balmy 80 degree day with plenty of sunshine and NO WIND!!! (We have had nothing but wind for the past two months. Like we say here in Texas, "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute. It will surely change!")

When the dust settled and all of the golf was through, here were the winners.

Ben Plaunt walked off with the Low Gross title with a 75-78 score, and Marcel Valade captured the Low Net title with his 136 total. (I must add that this was Ben's eighth straight win in Hickory Events. Congratulations BEN!)

Dr. Jay Harris captured the Senior Low Gross title with an 82-85 score and Bob Roofner nabbed the Low Net title with his 143 total.

The winning Scramble team included John Gates, Clayton Copple, John Ausen and Rives McBee with winning scores of 71-64 on the par 71 Las Colinas Country Club course. The runner-up team included Ron Lyons, Tom Hughes, Gary Proctor and Ryan Galloway with their 73-68 score over the two days. The third place team was composed of Eric Wolke, Russ Fisher, John McMurchy and Edwin Chan with their two day total of 73-71.

Bill Reed joined us this year and was kind enough to give the guest speaker's speech for the evening and I for one was very impressed with his eloquence! His knowledge and background provided everyone with valuable information about our organization and other tidbits.  Thanks Bill!

Again we had some great golf on a wonderful golf course. Great times spent with room trading, selling and buying and of course the wonderful stories and chats in the Hospitality Suite at the hotel. Evening trips to "Babes," "Vito's," "Mercado Jaurez," and "Dickey's BBQ" was enough to satisfy every taste imaginable!

I would be doing a terrible oversight if I did not mention the wonderful golf ball display that Rae Proctor, Gary's bride, put up in the registration room on Monday. She showed us all how to really display items so that it drew attention. Some very nice work!

Las Colinas Country Club and the LaQuinta Hotel & Suites were wonderful hosts and the event can be declared a very big success. Thanks to all who joined us and here's hoping more will join us next year.
